Movember: When the Mustache Gets It Right

The contraction of Mo – slang for "mustache" in Australia – and November, the Movember phenomenon raises awareness about men's health issues by inviting gentlemen to grow a mustache during the month of November. Are you or your loved one tempted by the idea? On your marks, get set, shave!

A Global Concept

Launched in 2003 in Melbourne, the Movember movement has come a long way since its inception. Thought up by a group of friends eager to draw attention to men's health, this original initiative has developed into a large-scale charity operation. Twenty countries, primarily English-speaking, today participate, with the United States, Canada and the UK leading the way.

Their goal? To raise funds to fight against diseases such as male cancers. And with great results: nearly 410 million Euros have been collected since 2003, making for a significant investment in medical research. Notably, a network of over 250 researchers has been established, in order to find the best treatments.

A Playful Approach

And "changing the face of men's health" has never been easier. After starting clean shaven on November 1, "Mo Bros" are encouraged to grow a mustache over the entire month, as a sign of support. Neither beard or goatee are permitted; the change of appearance must follow the rules of art to be perfectly recognizable but unique.

An action as playful and it is accessible with the mustache as catalyst, whose mission is to raise awareness differently, by sparking conversations. And whether via word-of-mouth or social networks, documenting your “mo” is part of the game. An activity in tune with the times, but here at the service of a good cause.

A Bold Cosmetic Venture

So by advocating frivolity to talk about serious subjects, the Movember movement reunites more and more mustache activists every year. But maintaining this new capillary feature is not necessarily easy for novices. For if the beard is popular among hipsters, the mustache, meanwhile, is more complicated to style.

To avoid faux pas, consider trimming it after approximately two to three weeks, using a comb and fine scissors, to redefine the shape and thickness. And after the fateful month, it is up to you whether to continue the experience or not. Gel, cream, balm or oil, L'Occitane treatments will accompany you every step of this fun challenge, all for a good cause.
